Andy’s Auto Care: trustworthy auto maintenance and repair
Most locals know Andy and Sonya Booth. Born and raised in Appomattox County - they both grew up attending Appomattox schools, and their families are entwined throughout the Appomattox community. For nearly 20 years now Andy and Sonya have owned and operated Andy’s Auto Care in the town of Appomattox.
(Writer’s note: To the newcomers in Appomattox County; if you don’t know Andy and Sonya Booth, you should meet them. They are good people.)
A little history
Andy Booth grew up on a locally-owned family dairy farm. He’d join his dad tending to the livestock and taking care of the farm. Andy learned at a young age the value in taking care of what you own, and repairing it when it needs fixing.
“On the dairy farm, when it breaks, you’ve got to learn how to fix it.” Andy explained that also included the vehicles on the farm.
Working on farm trucks was the beginning of Andy’s interest in auto repair, which continued to grow in his high school years and beyond.
“That was always my hobby. I never did hunt and fish and all that. I always worked on cars. It’s what I did for fun,” Andy explained.
In 2003, Andy and Sonya purchased a local auto repair shop from their pastor Jerry Childress, not far from their current location. They renamed the shop Andy’s Auto Care, and began meeting the maintenance and repair needs of the former business’s customers, as well as building their own client base.
After nearly 15 years in that location, the Booth’s made a move that allowed them more space for their business. They purchased a larger shop with more land on Autumn Lane. The shop’s former owner happened to be Andy’s childhood neighbor - a man who helped grow Andy’s interest in cars over the years.
Located in the big red building…
Andy’s Auto Care is located at 268 Autumn Lane, just behind Confederate Boulevard as you're headed out of town towards the onramp to 460 East. You’ll notice it because it’s the large red metal building with cars constantly in the parking lot. Andy and his crew work in the shop, and Sonya tends to the office work.
When you first walk into their recently-added office building addition, you’ll find a clean, family-friendly waiting area (that also smells very nice, too!) for those waiting for a quick service like a state inspection or oil change. It’s important to the Booths that their clients are comfortable while they await their vehicle’s service.
“It’s a nice environment for people to wait in, especially if they have kids,” Andy explained. As a family man, maintaining a safe clean atmosphere in the waiting area and the shop is important to Andy.
For larger service jobs, most people drop their vehicles off and go about their business, returning when the service is finished.
Andy’s offers a variety of general repair services, among the most popular being brake work, suspension work, exhaust repair, oil changes, tire changes, and air-conditioning service and repair. With a lifetime of experience maintaining and repairing vehicles, Andy is extremely knowledgeable in his field.
“It’s nice to be able to figure out what the problem is and fix it. It’s a challenge and I've always enjoyed that,” Andy explained.
Part of the community
The Booths’ business has grown by leaps and bounds since moving to their current location on Autumn Lane. With three vehicle lifts, their team is able to work on three or four cars at a time. The business will service anywhere from 10 to 20 vehicles a day, depending on the intricacies of each job.
Andy and Sonya are thankful for the faithful employees who work with them in the shop. The mechanics on Andy’s team have worked with him for several years. “We make a good team and work well together,” he said.
“We have very faithful employees,” Sonya added. “They are trustworthy, and everybody gets along. We are very thankful for them!”
Andy’s Auto Care has a reputation for treating their customers with kindness and honesty. “I try to treat people the way I would want to be treated,” Andy said.
“It’s hard to put into words how much we appreciate all of our customers. We’ve known many of them for years,” Sonya added.
“Appomattox has been a very good community, supporting us,” Sonya said, “we have very loyal customers.” “A lot of them are like family,” Andy added.
