Granny Bee's Restaurant: "When you're here, you're family!"
Batina Dunman grew up in Appomattox. When she graduated from high school in the 1990’s, she was hired by Cliff and Betty (“Granny Bee”) Drinkard to work as a waitress at their restaurant, called Granny Bee’s. At the time, the restaurant was located at Triangle Plaza, (in the current Garriss Flower Shop location.)
Batina enjoyed being part of the Granny Bee’s family. She loved seeing her friends and locals come in and enjoy their meals, and she liked meeting area visitors, too.
As time passed on, the restaurant would move to Main Street, (where it remains today). The Drinkards sold the restaurant to Lewis and Daphine Moore, who successfully continued to run the business over the next two decades.
Batina loved working as a server, and worked faithfully for the Drinkards and the Moores. In 2015, Batina and her parents, Richard and Verna Knight, partnered together to purchase the restaurant from the Moores.
Since then, the business has been quite the family affair! Batina manages the restaurant, while her mom, Verna, loves waiting tables and visiting with the restaurant’s guests. Batina’s sister and niece, (Stephanie and Jade) also work as servers and enjoy visiting with their customers, old friends and new ones, too. To the staff at Granny Bee’s, their customers are like extended family members.
Just like the Granny Bee’s menu says… “when you’re here, you’re family!”

What’s cookin’?
Granny Bee’s is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Mondays through Saturdays; and on Sundays, they serve breakfast and lunch (closing at 2pm). The meals at Granny Bee’s are exactly what you might remember your own granny making when you were a kid; good old fashioned made-to-order homestyle cooked dishes served hot and fresh just for you. You can bet that your granny and Batina use the same secret ingredient in their recipes, too: that’s Love!
Breakfast starts at 7am every day of the week and is served all day! Breakfast includes selections such as French toast, biscuits and gravy, grits, eggs, sandwiches, and don’t forget a side of crispy bacon! Batina says the number one selling breakfast is their omelets, which are, of course, made to order.
Lunch begins at 11am and be sure to come hungry. Warm fresh yeast rolls with softened butter are presented while you wait for your meal to be prepared. As you enjoy the rolls, take a look around to see local art on the walls. Some artwork pieces were created by Appomattox high school students and are “just for show,” while others are tasteful pieces of Civil War era art offered for sale by Wilkins Myrick Frame shop located on 460 in Appomattox.
Lunch consists of burgers and warm sandwiches like fish fillet, grilled chicken, roast beef or chuckwagon. They offer cold sandwiches too such as a good old fashioned B.L.T. or tuna salad sandwich. With appetizers like fried pickles, broccoli bites (yum!) and mozzarella sticks, you’re bound to leave Granny Bee’s with a full belly.
For those that are extra hungry, Granny Bee’s serves lunch platters of baked ham, chicken tenders, flounder, beef liver, fried shrimp, and more! Each platter comes with two vegetables, too. And, if you’re still hungry after all of that… you can order a slice of Batina’s house-made desserts: carrot cake, chocolate chess or apple pie; my, my, my! It’s hard to pick a favorite. (If you’re too full, you can order a slice to go!)
Dinner diners can enjoy plates filled with hamburger steak, roast beef, grilled chicken and more (see the full zoomable menu at the bottom of this article). Diners can also choose from a variety of steak and seafood dinners, cooked just the way you like! And, with just about every vegetable you can think of listed on the menu, there are plenty of sides to choose from; like fried okra, pickled beets, green beans and mashed potatoes… even rice pudding!
For those eating on the lighter side for lunch or dinner, Granny Bee’s offers a fresh salad bar every day as well as vegetarian options. A kid’s meal menu is also offered for guests ages 12 and under, too.
Here for the community
As a business owner, Batina understands the importance of community participation.
She is so grateful to community members who support her small business by dining with her, whether that’s occasionally, monthly, weekly, (and some, daily). Batina also desires to support the community’s charitable efforts, too.
That’s why Granny Bee’s is proud to support the local fire department, the annual Relay for Life walk-a-thon, and several other charitable events and fundraisers each year. Batina understands that a successful community happens when people support each other’s endeavors and she’s proud to be a part of the Appomattox Community.
Granny Bee’s is a 100-seat restaurant separated in two sections, making it a perfect place to host a large group, gathering, or party.
