Hoof & Feather BBQ: Now Open on Confederate Blvd

Andrew and Wendy Boswell, (along with their son Henry, daughter Jacquelyn and Andrew’s mother & grandmother) moved to Appomattox in 2017. They bought a home with 18 acres of land and decided it would be a beautiful place to create a small farm. The farm operates today under the name Wolf Creek Farms.

The Boswell family’s goal, originally, was to raise cattle and pigs on the farm, so they could have fresh pasture-raised meats for their family. Wendy has several food allergies, so when the family moved from the east coast of Virginia to their quaint farm in Appomattox, raising their own meats and even growing their own produce was a high priority.

“I like knowing what’s going into the foods we’re eating,” Wendy said. Quickly, their friends back home in Hampton Roads learned of the Bosswell’s new farm venture and showed interest in purchasing meat from the Boswells. Several households began purchasing farm fresh meats every time Wendy returned to their old stomping grounds, (which was often when they first moved to the area) due to work responsibilities.

With the popularity of their meats increasing “back home” at the coast, the Boswells began to offer their selections to friends in Appomattox as well. Fast forward a few years to today: they now have several faithful customers and their meat selections are growing in popularity!

Fresh from the farm

Andrew and Wendy believe in farming the traditional way - the way farms were run 100-plus years ago, as opposed to newer tactics used by some commercial big-agriculture companies.

When you buy meat fresh from Wolf Creek Farms, you can rest assured that you’re getting high quality meat.

The Boswells explained that they choose to raise their pigs the old fashioned way because pasture raised pork is generally higher in protein and vitamin E, and higher in omega-3 fats than pigs raised commercially in barns.

They also explained that pasture raised pigs, for example, can run and forage and chomp on an array of plants and nuts in addition to their meals of non-gmo silage and grain, versus pigs that are raised indoors are often fed high-corn diets.

There’s quite a bit of science that the Boswell’s follow while raising cattle as well. Be sure to ask them about it!

Whether you’re looking to purchase a live cow, pig, lamb or chicken, or you’re looking for farm-fresh meats, be sure to check out Wolf Creek Farms for a great selection to choose from.

From Farm to Fork

Like their old-school ways of raising livestock, Andrew Boswell also believes in the old-school ways of smoking barbecue. If it doesn’t take at least 12 hours to make, it’s not the real deal for Andrew.

Andrew and Wendy decided to take their farm fresh foods to the next level and they have opened Hoof and Feather BBQ. They’ve been selling their barbecue and sides at various locations in town for well over a year, and now, they are happy to announce they’ve found a permanent home to sell their delicious meals in Appomattox. You can now find their food truck located at 1689 Confederate Boulevard (the former location of The Taco Wagon food truck).

Andrew and Wendy love serving barbecue to people in Appomattox. What started out as catering barbecue for events has turned into a full-time business!

Hoof and Feather BBQ offers pork barbecue, pulled chicken, hot dogs and hamburgers, and bratwursts, as well as Italian sausages with peppers and onions. They also make French fries, hushpuppies, baked beans, green beans, and coleslaw.

The Boswells explained that the pasture-raised pork and beef served at Hoof and Feather BBQ comes from their farm in Appomattox. Occasionally, they will also source locally-raised meats from other local farms in the area as well.

“Our meat is special because we don’t take any shortcuts. It can take 12 hours or 14 hours before it’s ready to be served,” Andrew explained. He uses pecan and apple woods during the slow smoking process. Hoof and Feather BBQ also offers their own freshly-made sauces. Flavors include regular, hot, honey-garlic, sriracha, and of course, Carolina vinegar sauce.

Canned sodas as well as freshly brewed sweet and unsweet teas are also available.

You can buy their delicious meats by the platter, the sandwich, or by the pound. Sides are offered by the pint or quart.
