Iceland's: Beat the heat with a sweet treat

On a hot summer day, there’s nothing quite as refreshing as a delicious ice cream treat, and at Iceland’s of Appomattox, that’s exactly what you’ll find!

What does Iceland’s offer?

From their famous banana splits, hot fudge brownie sundaes, or good old fashioned milkshakes (with whipped cream and cherry on top? Yes, please!) to the local kids’ favorite, the flavor burst cone (vanilla ice cream with colorful swirls of yummy flavor in a sugar cone) you’re sure to find a treat you’ll love. And, when you bring your four-legged friends to Iceland’s, they’ll even offer a pup-cup for Fido, too.

Don’t worry - if you happen to be on no-dairy, no-gluten or no-nut diet…. NO problem! They have sweet options for you as well. The Dole Whip at Iceland’s is a frozen fruit-based treat that is sure to delight the tastebuds.

A little history…

Iceland’s opened for business in April 2020 amidst the beginning of the COVID shutdown. Owning a food truck was a blessing for Alan and Laura Briceland during a time when restaurant dining was forbidden. Families could still go for a ride and pick up a treat and enjoy a small slice of normalcy at Iceland’s.

Owning an ice cream truck had been a long-time dream of the Bricelands, and in 2020, they found the right truck, at the right price, at the right time. (Don’t you just love when that happens?) …and that’s how it all began.

When starting any new venture, deciding on the perfect business name is quite an undertaking, and after exhausting every ice-cream based name they could think of, Laura jokingly asked Alan, “How about Iceland’s?” - a play off of their family name. And, well, the rest is history! Today, the name “Iceland’s” is well known throughout Appomattox - and beyond.

The Farmer’s Market of Appomattox

Alan and Laura also host the weekly Saturday Farmer’s Market on the Iceland’s property. With an average of 20 vendors each week, you can find fresh produce, organic meats, and canned goods - all locally sourced. (No reselling of chain produce here!) Craft vendors and artisans also sell their wares at the market, so be sure to check out what our local vendors have to offer! Saturdays from 8-12, through October in the grassy field at Iceland’s. Your support of local vendors keeps their businesses going.

Community

Community is very important to the Bricelands, and that’s why they offer community engagement in a variety of ways through their businesses. From their farmer’s market, hosting community fundraisers, presenting events like free outdoor movies throughout the summer and their end-of-year holiday market (happening November 26th - mark your calendar!), they’ve created a venue where locals and visitors alike can enjoy an outing, devour a delicious treat, pick up a gift, or just simply make memories spending time together.

The Bricelands’ entrepreneurship has resulted in successful businesses and they have also received quite a bit of appreciation from Appomattox locals.

“It has been a very good outpouring. It’s getting to the point now that we can’t go anywhere without people recognizing us and thanking us and saying that they like this or that, that we’re doing. It’s nice,” Alan explained.

Laura added, “We just appreciate the community. We try to do a lot and we try to give back. We tell our staff at the trailer all the time ‘if we didn’t have the support from the community, we wouldn’t be where we are.’ They definitely drive our business and make it the success that it is.”
