That’s Too Cute Boutique offers trendy styles and unique gifts
Twenty-two years ago, Penny Welch worked at a local preschool. The children at the school would bring towels to lay on during nap time. The school staff would attach a piece of masking tape onto the towels and each child's name would be written on the tape, on the towel they brought. This helped ensure that every child used their own towel.
While the tape was certainly useful, it was definitely “not cute”. That’s when Penny had the idea to appliqué the children’s names onto towels with vibrant, colorful fabric. These towels quickly became a big hit among locals and in 2009, Penny began a small online business called That’s Too Cute Boutique, selling the appliqué towels and other embroidered items as well.
Fast forward to today.
Penny, her husband George, and their daughter Amy Welch now operate three retail stores: One is located at The Shoppes of Appomattox on Richmond Highway and two are located inside River Ridge mall in Lynchburg. Penny says the success of That’s Too Cute Boutique feels like a dream.
What’s in store for you at That’s Too Cute Boutique
When you first walk into the boutique, you’ll be greeted by Penny or one of the store’s associates who understand the value of greeting their guests while also allowing them to have space to shop. You won’t find pushy salespeople at That’s Too Cute Boutique! Instead, you’ll receive a nice welcome in a relaxed atmosphere, and help if needed.
The store is filled with racks and shelves of the latest trends for women of all ages, (in sizes 0 to 3X). The store is re-stocked with items weekly; so each time you visit, you’re likely to discover something new.
You’ll find trendy women’s clothing, hats, and accessories, as well as fragrant candles, essential oil diffusers, detergents, a variety of quality baby gift items, home and kitchen wares, self-care items, and gifts for men.
And, you'll even find items from local artisans such as the hand-made "Leather, Glitter and Grace" earrings by Appomattox native Gina Wright.
Make it Personal
Personalized monogrammed items are always in style, and they are a specialty of the boutique. Sweatshirts, raincoats, quarter zip pullovers, purses, backpacks, baby blankets and more can be monogrammed at That’s Too Cute Boutique at no additional cost!
That’s right! As long as it’s monogram-able, the team can add initials or a name to any item in the store for free!
Penny and the team also monogram clothing and gifts that are brought in by customers wanting personalization. The pricing for this service is very reasonable, and turnaround time is generally 3-5 days. (Keep in mind, this service may take longer during the holiday shopping season.) If you’re interested in getting an item monogrammed, Penny suggests that the item should be brand new (or in like-new condition). Penny will also inspect each item to make sure it is monogram-able when it is brought in for personalization.
Giving Back in the community - and across the globe
Penny and the team at That’s Too Cute Boutique believe in helping others.
They sponsor a local youth soccer team. They provide funds for a local travel softball team. They have participated in the Appomattox High School soccer team’s Pink Game, which raises funds for a local cancer patient. The store also participates in many local fundraisers.
Additionally, several of the products in the store “give back” as well. For example,you’ll find unique handwoven canasta bags and totes made from 100% recycled plastic threads. Penny is especially fond of the group that these bags represent: They are made by women in Guatemala who are paid a fair wage through a Christian organization. The sale of each bag helps the Guatemalan women support their families and hopefully climb out of the generational curse of poverty that plagues so many people in Guatemala. Penny supports this mission and her store does not take any of the profit from the sale of these bags!
Other examples of products that "give back" include the brand of men’s soaps, beard, and hair products at That’s Too Cute Boutique which supports veterans and a brand of purses in the store which gives support to those battling cystic fibrosis.
