The Farmers Bank of Appomattox: a true community bank
The Farmers Bank of Appomattox has been serving the banking needs of the people in Appomattox for over 100 years. Now, that’s truly a community bank!
“It was started by a group of local businessmen, who wanted to have a local bank, to be able to be responsive to the businesses of Appomattox,” John Caldwell, the president and CEO of The Farmers Bank of Appomattox explained.
Today, The Farmers Bank of Appomattox has five locations: Main Street in Appomattox, Triangle Plaza in Appomattox, Village Highway in Concord, as well as locations in Farmville and Dillwyn. The bank employs approximately 75 people within their five branches.
The bank’s main branch is located on Main Street in Appomattox, though it is now 4 times the size of the original bank building in 1918.
(Writer’s Note: The portion of the Main Branch building where the teller counter is located today was the original bank. The post office, once upon a time, was adjoined to it, and beside the post office were two other businesses along Main Street. Today, after several modifications, the continues to stand in its original location and it has also expanded to where those three other entities used to be. You are encouraged to visit the lobby on Main Street and view the original teller wall as you walk into the building. There is also a neat display of the bank’s 100+ year history in the lobby as well.)
Financial Experts and Local Friends
"We have a great staff - a very dedicated staff. We have some retirements happening this year where the employees have worked over 30 years for our bank,” explained John, who has worked at the bank for 37 years. We had one retirement last year where the employee had worked 45 years for our bank!”
“People look at their banker- whether it’s their teller or whether it’s their loan officer - as someone who is a financial expert that they can go to ask questions. Here, we’ve got a lot of experience and a lot of dedicated employees,” John said.
The staff at The Farmers Bank of Appomattox truly believe in relationship banking. They understand that being a community bank means getting to know the good folks who walk in their doors, calling them by name, and treating them with old fashioned kindness and manners.
Banking with The Farmers Bank of Appomattox means that your bank representatives are very responsive to your questions and requests. Loan decisions, for example, are made within the bank, (as opposed to sending your request through a corporate ladder, waiting for a decision to be made on your behalf by strangers.) It also means when you call the bank, you’ll speak with a live person instead of receiving an automated answering service. When you’re a member with The Farmers Bank of Appomattox, trying their best to meet your banking needs is a priority.
The Farmer’s Bank of Appomattox believes in participating in the community. That means, the employees roll up their sleeves and get involved in community events, local sports, and they support local nonprofits through donations and volunteerism as well.
“That is a big part of what we do. We try to invest back into the communities we serve,” John explained. “Part of being a good member of a community is giving back.”
